Lauren Shaw – Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD)

Lauren is an APD registered with the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) after completing a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics at the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, in 2015. She has worked with adults and children in Queensland and New South Wales. Her interests include coeliac disease and irritable bowel syndrome, eating disorders, paediatric nutrition and growth, and all aspects of food, eating and nutrition. She believes that food and nutrition is an integral aspect of health and ill health, and is passionate about wholesome nutritious food that is inviting and delicious.

Better Balance Clinic

The JCU Physiotherapy Better Balance program is a six-week group exercise program, designed to help improve an individual’s balance, confidence and overall mobility. It provides an opportunity to exercise in an air-conditioned fun, social, and safe environment whilst under the close guidance of physiotherapists and physiotherapy students.

Who: anyone aged 60 years and over
When: Tuesday or Friday afternoon (2pm – 4pm) for 6 weeks
Where: JCUHealth, Level 1 , Clinical Practice Building
Cost: $5 each session (includes afternoon tea)

What does the program include?

  • Six weeks of a physiotherapist supervised exercise program designed to strengthen leg muscles and improve balance
  • Program run in a well-lit, air-conditioned environment
  • A personalized take-home booklet of exercises with exercise checklist
  • Afternoon tea
  • Optional notification to your GP of your participation and improvement(s)

What do I need?

  • Comfortable, loose fitting clothing suitable for exercise
  • Closed in shoes (preferred)
  • Water bottle (water supplied if forgotten)
  • Any medications required during this time (e.g. asthma puffer)

New – Interprofessional Clinic

James Cook University (JCU) provides high quality Interprofessional services for individuals with conditions that may require several different professionals. A nurse will discuss your service needs in an initial assessment and prepare a care plan that allows the patient to see multiple clinicians at the same time. Services in this program include Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, Psychology Exercise Physiology and Physiotherapy.

We accept self-referrals as well as health and educational professionals. The cost of our service is $30 for assessments and ongoing treatments.

Exercise Physiology gym open

The Exercise Physiology Clinic has opened its doors to clients. Our staff provide professional assistance if you experience any chronic health conditions such as diabetes, obesity, low back pain or arthritis. Other conditions recommended to be supervised by exercise physiologists include (but is not limited to) experiencing muscular/ joint pain, recovering from or needing orthopaedic surgery or having asthma, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression or neurological conditions like Parkinson’s Disease or dementia.We are also in the process of developing condition specific group-based programs.
